Emily's good friend and former college roommate, Shalini Kantayya, is a semi-finalist on Steven Spielberg's new talent discovery show, On the Lot. Shalini, for those who remember, had filmed our wedding. We're proud of you and are cheering you on. Emily says "vote for Shalini, or you'll have one angry pregos to deal with."

Shelter Island Weekend סוף שבוע באי

לה קומפקט ואני בילינו את סוף השבוע בשלטר איילנד, בערך שעתיים וחצי מזרחה מהעיר. היה נורא שקט ויפה ורגוע ונצרך. אולי סוף שבוע אחרון כשניים?

La Compact and I spent the weekend on Shelter Island, about two and a half hours East of the city. It was very quiet and pretty and relaxing and needed. Perhaps our last weekend as just two?

Pitstop Dinner תדלוק אחרון

יצאנו שלשום לארוחת ערב עם קולגות של אמילי מהמוזיאון. קיבלנו כמה מתנות חמודות והמון איחולי בהצלחה, אהבה ואנגרגיה חיובית . אמילי מקווה לעבוד עד ללידה, כך שזו היתה השתיה שלפני. בתמונה, כריסי, אבי, לייזה ואמילי.

We had dinner on Tuesday with museum friends. We got some great stuff, and a lot of love and kind wishes. La Compact is planning on working until Tinoki comes, and this was a really nice sendoff. In the picture: Chrisy, Abby, Liza and Emily.

Too Cute חמודי

קיבלנו במקלחת כמה בגדי גוף ממותגים במידה. אין, זה חמוד. תודה לאמא של אמילי על התמונה. אתמול היתה ארוחת ערב עם כמה מהקולגות של אמילי במוזיאון. תמונות בקרוב.

We got a few nicely branded onesies at the shower. Cute. Many thanks to Emily's mom for the great pic. Also, yesterday we had a really fun congratulatory dinner with some of Emily's co-workers at the museum. Pics to come.

Countdown סופרים לאחור

We're now officially full term. woo hoo. La Compact is doing well. She's tired, and her back hurts a bit, but she's chuggin' along.

עברו תשעה חודשים. תשעה חודשים מאז אמיליונת לגמה כוסית יין. תשעה חודשים מאז היא אכלה בשר נא. תשעה חודשים מאז היא קמה בבוקר לכוס קפה נורמלי. קשה לה. מערכת היחסים הענפה שהיתה לה עם עולם המזון השתנתה ביום אחד ובאופן חד צדדי לחלוטין מצידה. חיתוך קר. כמו לוחם נינג'ה מפוקס שחי מדיאטה של עלים ומי גשם, לה קומפקט הוציאה פטווה קולינרי על האסורים. והאסורים קיבלו מעמד של נעדר נוכח. מיתוסים קטנים של טעם ומרקם.

אז זהו. המיתוס עומד להתנפץ. לה קומפט הכריזה שהחרם המערכתי שלה על האסורים מסתיים בשניות הראשונות של אחרי הלידה. עם התינוקי בא התאבון, ואמילי הודיעה מה היא רוצה לאכול מייד אחרי הלידה: סושי ונקניקיה. ולא סתם סושי, אלה בלו ריבון סושי, ולא סתם נקניקיה, אלה המקבילה הניו יורקית של הקומפלט של החומוס: נקניקיה מהרחוב, עם קטשופ, חרדל וכרוב. קומפלט לקומפקט. קצוות קולינריים.

It's been nine months. Nine months since Emily enjoyed a glass of wine. Nine months since she's been able to order rare. Nine months since she's been able to awake to a normal cup of coffee. It's been nine months since L'emilionnette changed her relationship with food. A one sided change in a relationship that's been growing with mutual love for years. Nine months since she issued a culinary fatwa on the forbidden, and the forbidden have gained a unique status of the absent who are present; they became myth.

And now the myth is about to end. Announcing what she wants after the birth, baby's arrival is the renewal of Emily's relationship with the forbidden. Who made the cut: Sushi and a hotdog. Not just any Sushi, but Blue Ribbon Sushi. And not just any hotdog, but a dirty water street hotdog, with all the trimmings. It's the meeting of Plebian and Patrician foods in the soon to be roomier belly of la Compact.

Tell Me Don't Show Me דברים שרואים מכאן

לאחרונה ראיתי שלוש תוכניות טלויזיה שעוסקות בהריון, הורות ולידה.בייב סטורי בערוץ טי.אל.סי שעוסקת בהריון ובשינויים שמשפחות עוברות בעקבותיו. תינוק בבית, גם היא משודרת בערוץ טי.אל.סי, שמתמקדת ביממה\שבוע הראשון של התינוק בבית ושדומה באופן מבהיל לבייבי סטורי. התוכנית האחרונה היא רשימות מהבטן שמשודרת בערוץ אי.בי.סי.

רשימות היא פשוט תוכנית גרועה. היא מציגה מקבץ של שחקנים שמוכרים מתפקידי משנה שונים בסדרות שונות - או שדומים באופן מפתיע לשחקנים שמוכרים מתפקידי משנה שונים בסדרות שונות - ויש לה דיאלוג שבנוי מקלישאה מופלצת אחת אחרי השנייה: כמו האשה שבולמוס הרעב הבלתי נשלט שלה גורם לה לעבור באדום ולעצור בחקירת בלמים מול דלפק ההזמנה של המקדונלדס המקומי, או הזוג שרוצה לקנות מיני וואן כי משפחה של שלוש נפשות לא יכולה להתקיים ברכב נורמלי. יש סדרות שיודעות להנפיק דיאלוג ועומק, כמו בנות גילמור ואוז. זו לא אחת מהן. אני יכול להתפלסף על הרדידות והצורך למזער רגשות לכדי סל מטלות התנהגותי קצר. אני יכול גם שלא. זו פשוט לא תוכנית טובה.

שתי התוכניות שמשודרות בערוץ טי.אל.סי שונות. הם מנסות לצייר דיוקן דוקו-דרמטי של הלידה ומה שבא אחריה. אבל בתור תוכניות טלוויזיה, הן חייבות חומר וויזואלי. מה לעשות שקל יותר להציג זוג הורים עייף להחריד מאשר לדבר על ההתפתחות הריגשית שהיא היא תהליך ההורות. מה לעשות שקל יותר להראות אשה שלא התקלחה יומיים מאשר לדבר על קשר שמתפתח ונוצר עם ילד. הבעיה היא שהחומר הוויזואלי משעמם מאוד מהר, תוכניות אחת או שתיים מקס. את התפתחויות היותר מעניינות פשוט אי אפשר לצלם.

I recently caught three shows on TV that focus on expectant parents and having babies: A Baby Story, which airs on TLC, and focuses on getting pregnant and the changes that having a baby has on a family; Brining Home Baby, also on TLC, that focuses on the birth and the first day/week at home (and is virtually indistinguishable from Baby Story), and Notes from the Underbelly, on ABC.

Notes is TV at its worst. Take a few actors who you've seen playing one dimensional characters in various guest appearances on other shows (and if not, they are indistinguishable from actors you've seen playing one dimensional guest characters on different shows), and write every possible cliché about pregnancy: women having sudden uncontrolled cravings that force them to run a red light and screech into a drive through; freak out fests over buying a mini-van, and so on. Some TV shows do dialog and emotion well, like Gilmore Girls, Oz and Mind of a Married Man. Others don't. I can socio-analyze the way in which the show commodifies emotional experiences into bucketable scripted behavioral check lists, or I can just say it's a poorly done show. So it's a poorly done show.

The TLC shows are different. They try to tell a reality-docu-drama story of what happens when a baby joins a family. The problem with both shows is that as reality based programs on TV, they need footage of things happening: show me, rather than tell me. So instead of talking about the emotional growth one feels as an expectant parent, the shows focus on the hectic affect babies have on parents' lives. Instead of exploring the couple's dynamic and what it means to actually love a baby, it shows that new parents don't sleep. Ultimately, the show me of these shows loses it's grasp after one or two episodes. The more interesting developments of expectant parenthood don't really have footage to match.

It's Raining Baby Media גשם של בייבי מדיה

המקלחת של האמיליונת הרעיפה עלינו גשם זלעפות של מוצרי מדיה לתינוקות: בייבי איינשטיין, דוקטור סוס וכו. לזה צריך להוסיף את שלל הספרים והדי.וי.די שאני קניתי בביקור האחרון בארץ, כולל איה פלוטו ודירה להשכיר - יצירות מופת, אחת אחת. אז עכשיו יש לנו המון מדיה לתינוקי, מספיק למלא שני מדפים. שני מדפים של יצירות מופת, אחת אחת.

רוב הספרים הם דברים שאני ואמלי קראנו כילדים. אבל מה אם תוכניות הטלוויזיה שראינו? קבלו את יו-טוב. התוכנית האהובה על לה קומפקט המתבגרת היתה גן הקסמים, ומספיק 20 שניות ממנה כדי להבין את החיבה התמוהה משהו של אמילי לדר וויליאמס ואנני דיפרנקו. אני לא ממש חושב שהיתה לי סידרה אהובה כילד, אבל ישר התחלתי לחפש פרקים של קישקשתא. ואני עדיין מנסה לקשר בין קישקשתא לבין חוסר החיבה שלי לדר וויליאמס. קליפים מייד אחרי הטקסט באנגלית...

The shower left puddles of baby media: Baby Einstein videos, Dr. Seuss Books, etc. Add to this the fact that during my last visit home in December, I picked up several Israeli books and videos, including Aye Pluto (Where's Pluto) and Dira le-Haskir (Apartment to Rent), etc. Classics, all of them. So now we got a lot, about 2 shelves worth of classics, all of them.

Many of the books are things Emilionette and I grew up on. But what about all those great TV shows we watched as kids? Enter YouTube. La Compact's favorite TV show as a kid was Magic Garden. Check it out. It actually explains her love for all thing Dar Williams and Ani Difranco. I don't know if I had a favorite per se growing up, but I immediately searched for a show called Kishkashta (kishkush in hebrew=jumbled/scribbled), that featured a cactus hand puppet. I'm still trying to figure out how this may explain my dislike of Dar Williams.
